TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - NORMAL LYMPHOPOIESIS AND THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM A1 - Hillman, Robert S. A1 - Ault, Kenneth A. A1 - Leporrier, Michel A1 - Rinder, Henry M. PY - 2016 T2 - Hematology in Clinical Practice, 5e AB - Normal lymphopoiesis is an essential component in host defense. It involves the proliferation and function of several types of lymphoid cells including B cells, which are the antibody-producing cells; T cells, which carry out cell-mediated immune functions and are largely responsible for regulatory control of the immune system; and the natural killer (NK) cells, which function more in a macrophage-like role in host defense against infection and malignancy. An understanding of normal lymphopoiesis requires knowledge of individual cell characteristics and expected responses of these cells to disease states.
